OUT YOUTH

UX Strategy & Visual Design

Over a six month duration, my team Ideation League worked with Out Youth. A non-profit organization providing LGBTQ+ youth from ages 13 to 23 counseling services to support their development. Some of the services we provided are extensive research, heuristic evaluation, content strategy, system design, and branding.

THE CHALLENGE

Out Youth has a challenging time managing a base of over 1000 volunteers. We helped develop a volunteer mentoring strategy to manage the issue. They need a way to organize and onboard their volunteer pool. This will help understaffed areas of the organization.

Main constraints were:

  • Privacy; due to the sensitive nature of working with individuals under 18

  • Low cost solutions to fit within the nonprofit’s modest budget

  • Sustaining their youth centered culture

RESEARCH

We applied Human Centered Design practices including contextual interviews, field observations, ethnographic inquiries, journaling, card sorting, concept provocation, outside research, A/B testing and ESRI geo data analysis. We studied the organization from different perspectives, and learned of the many requirements, challenges, and needs.

We focused on:

  • Youth

  • Staff

  • Volunteers

  • Clinical care

  • Alumni

RESEARCH SYNTHESIS

With our design challenge at the center of our research, we clustered themes into insight statements. 

We defined "How Might We" questions to each insight to help guide us through ideation.

Feasibility Map

During divergence we generated many ideas and turned them into actionable opportunities. With a feasibility map we pinpointed what we could implement by low cost opportunities serving high impact.

Structure Map

Mapping the organizational structure showed us the interconnections between different touch points. Most importantly the structure map highlighted the volunteers silo from the rest of the organization

VOLUNTEER STRATEGY

We developed an in-depth volunteer strategy divided into 3 stages designed to connect with the right volunteer category. After a period of a year, the system would loop and become self-sustaining with low administrative management control. 

 

This strategy will bridge the silo to the rest of the organization supporting all other strategy efforts such as a Transportation Initiative, Alumni Network, and School Outreach Plan.

REPORT OF FINDINGS

I created visualization of data and research that helped identify patterns, metrics, growth, absorb stories, share organizational insights in a clear and transparent way beneficial for staff, board members, and funding. 

 

We provided an in-depth report of findings in a digestible format. The document was structured by color to highlight key areas to sustain, grow, and change such as:

  • Sustain youth culture by continuing to foster youth-led peer-to-peer discussions, youth-led voting of norms and interaction with one another
  • Grow by outreach to public libraries with internet access to reach youth in underserved and rural communities
  • Change the broken online GSA Network website
